Family: Ericaceae (Heath family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: May - June
Mid-Atlantic fruit ripe: August - October

Early Azalea is one of our early blooming pink to white deciduous azaleas. It prefers middle to high elevations and mesic to dry forests and woodlands. Once fully emerged, the underside of Early Azalea's leaves are densely and softly pubescent, unlike the similar Pink Azalea (Rhododendron periclymenoides) which has leaves mostly without pubescent undersides (except along their midrib and major veins).
