Family: Polygalaceae (Milkwort family)
Mid-Atlantic bloom time: June - September
Whorled Milkwort inflorescences are in racemes or spikes atop their stem, typically flowering from the bottom up. Its leaves are small and linear, about 0.5-5mm wide and 6-30 mm long.
Recent studies (Pastore et al. (2019, Taxon 68: 673-691)) have shown that the old genus Polygala was actually two separate groups that are phylogenetically separated into an Old World group and a New World group. The members of the New World group, including Whorled Milkwort, were moved to a new genus Senega to reflect this.
