Smooth Sumac's red clusters of fruit can only be confused with Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina). Smooth Sumac's stems are smooth (not hairy), and its fruit have much shorter hairs than Staghorn's. It is also found throughout, whereas Staghorn is more common in the mountainous regions.
