Sweet-scented Joe-Pye-weed shows a high amount of variability, with up to three varieties currently recognized:
- var. purpureum (widespread in eastern North America)
- var. carolinianum (in Southeastern Piedmont)
- var. holzingeri (Midwestern U.S.)
The variety shown here is var. purpureum.
The plants have a sweet vanilla-scent. It has stems that have pith to varying degrees.
