Family: Commelinaceae
Mid-Atlantic bloom time: June - October
The Erect Dayflower is easily found in native habitats with its two blue petals and lower white petal brightly standing out against the greenery.
It is quite similar to the non-native Commelina communis which shares the same common name 'Dayflower'. Commelina erecta can be distinguished from the non-native by noting that its flower spathe is fused at its base rather than free, and the its leaf sheaths are white-ciliate rather than smooth (glabrous). It also has a more erect habit than the non-native Creeping Dayflower.
